Rodney P’s Jazz Funk

BBC FOUR

1 x 60 documentary

TX July 24th 2020 9pm

Rodney P reveals how the first black British generation – kids born in the 50s and 60s and coming of age in the 70s, built a culture that reflected their own experiences here in Britain, and laid down the foundations of modern day multiculturalism by creating the first truly homegrown black British music culture. Rodney also discovers the deep bonds that emerged between the marginalised young black clubbers and the still-underground gay scene as both communities fought against hostility to express themselves on their own terms. Jazz Funk was eclipsed with the coming of Hip Hop and House, but long before the Rave scene of the late 80s or the global club culture of today, it was in the Jazz-funk scene of the 1970s that all-dayers, all-nighters, superclubs and super star DJs first appeared, creating the first commercial platform for a generation of young black British DJs, dancers, artists and clubbers.
